3 Critical Considerations For Any Home Theater Design

Craft the perfect home theater for your family with these key tips

Imagine walking down the hall and opening the door to your personal home theater. Dedicated home cinemas have become more prevalent in the past few years, and for a good reason. Commercial cinemas are severely limited in their showings, only playing new releases. In a home theater, you can watch old movies, TV shows, and movies on demand. You can watch what you want when you want to watch it. To enjoy the benefits of a private cinema, you need to ensure that the installation goes smoothly. Discover three things you need to consider in your home theater design project in Bergen County, NJ.

The Room

Selecting the room should be the first step in any home theater design project. Most of the time, we place televisions in our living room, bedroom, or kitchen. While this makes it convenient to watch TV, it does not give us a truly immersive experience. These rooms have windows that allow sunlight into the room, causing a glare on the screen and a dimmed picture. Glass windows reflect sound and light, affecting both the image and the audio. An ideal room has no windows and one door while also being large enough to fit multiple seats. High ceilings are an excellent choice for home theater rooms, but a high-quality setup can still be created in a room with a low ceiling.

Screen Distance

The second most important thing to consider is the distance between the screen and the viewer and, in turn, the screen size. If you are too close to the picture, you will have to crane your neck to see everything, much like sitting in the front row of a commercial theater. If you are too far, you will miss out on the fine details of your 4K display. Generally, your distance from the screen should be between 1.5 and 2 times the diagonal width of the display. It also should be at eye level; a screen that is too low forces you to look down, and a screen that is too high does the opposite. Before selecting a display, carefully measure the dimensions of your space so that you can determine what size screen is the best fit for your home theater.

Lighting

Lastly, you should consider the lighting of your space. As stated, ideally, you should select a room with no windows, but if that isn't possible, you should black them out entirely with motorized shades to block out the sunlight. You will be able to easily open and close your shades with just the tap of a button. Smart lighting will also add convenience to your home theater. Dim your lights from your smart device of choice without getting up from your chair. If you need to take a bathroom break in the middle of the movie, hit pause and turn your lights back on so you don’t need to stumble in the dark.
