How to Avoid Common In-Wall Subwoofer Problems
A High-End Brand and Professional Installation Make All the Difference
Over the years, in-wall subwoofers have gotten a reputation for being a subpar solution. Not only is it hard to find an appropriate placement for them, but often they don’t quite pack the punch of their in-room counterparts. Though we’ve seen our share of problems in past installations, they usually stem from using the wrong products or installing them incorrectly.
In-wall subwoofers work well in your home theater or media room when you use high-end brands in conjunction with experienced installers. In this blog, we highlight some of the ways we successfully integrate in-wall subwoofers into our projects throughout Morris County, NJ.

Bringing Us Early Into Your Project
When calibrating a media room or theater, subwoofer placement is extremely important. But what if your walls don’t have enough space to integrate subwoofers where they’re needed? We recommend bringing us into your media room or home theater design early, so we can work with architects and builders to ensure the required wall space is there. There are also smaller subwoofers like the JL Audio Fathom® IWS-SYS-108 that pack a big punch in a compact size to expand your options.
Properly Calibrating Your Equipment
With both in-wall speakers and subwoofers, there can be challenges in getting the right sound staging, especially for surround sound. That’s because this often requires trial and error when it comes to the subwoofer placement in particular. However, with an in-wall subwoofer, it's hard to switch once you’ve set the location. There are a few things we can do to help here.
First, we’ll help you choose a location that works best for sound quality, so we can more easily predict the perfect place for your subwoofer. Second, we’ll calibrate your equipment extensively to work within the determined layout. JL Audio’s subwoofers include trademark room correction technology which we combine with our extensive AV expertise to calibrate your subwoofer for optimal bass performance.
Creating the Right Soundproofing Environment
The equipment you choose is just as important as the design. Many low-end in-wall subwoofers use an IB model that leaves the back of the drivers exposed. The result is predictable: audio seeps out of the room, and your subwoofer could easily have your whole house shaking with muddled bass. JL Audio subwoofers may be small in profile but rigid enough to contain the sound they produce. Their 13.5-inch model includes a floating mount design to reduce wall vibrations as well.
